What is Ride for a Child?

Ride for a Child (RFC) is a special program within Pedal the Cause that pairs teams with pediatric oncology patients who have gone through treatment or are currently being treated at Siteman Kids at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. It is an inspiring way for teams to connect with a child who is or has undergone cancer treatment and ride in Pedal the Cause with purpose and determination.

Through pre-event meet-ups and events, teams are able to form a meaningful connection with their child and family, with many teams and families staying in touch long after the event. For participating children, the RFC program gives them a supportive team of individuals that will train, fundraise and ride in their honor.

Meet A Few Brave RFC Kiddos!

Dr. Jeff Bednarski and Elsie

Since being diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia at age 5, Elsie has faced three stem cell treatments and countless extended stays in the hospital as she has fought the disease. In 2019, Dr. Jeff Bednarski's new immunotherapy trial utilizing Natural Killer (NK) cells, which was initially funded by Pedal the Cause, offered new hope to Elsie and her family. This year's Elsie is the ambassador and Ride for a Child for Team St. Louis Children's Hospital - the institution that saved her life.

Dr. Brossier & Henry

When Henry first met Dr. Nicole Brossier, a Washington University and St. Louis Children’s Hospital physician specializing in pediatric brain tumors, he was losing vision in both eyes due to an inoperable optic pathway glioma. Thanks to research—including projects funded by Pedal the Cause—that has advanced biologically targeted treatments, Henry’s tumor is now under control. Today, he’s back to enjoying time with his family and doing all the things he loves most.
