Funding Cancer Research to Further Innovation

June 12, 2025

After 15 years of riding and raising critical funds to support cancer research, the impact of the $51 million donated by Pedal the Cause is in clear focus. Within five years of investment, for every $1 Pedal the Cause donates to fund cancer research at Siteman Cancer Center and Siteman Kids at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, an additional $14 is obtained from outside sources to further advance these projects. With this 14:1 ROI, Pedal the Cause has been the catalyst for garnering over half a billion dollars for St. Louis-based cancer research since 2010.

“Since the beginning, the dedicated Pedal community has never wavered and remains passionately focused on accelerating transformational cancer research,” said David Drier, executive director of Pedal the Cause. “In light of uncertainty in federal funding for this critical research, our mission is now more important than ever. Science cannot pause – cancer patients’ lives are depending on it. At Pedal the Cause, we are committed to sustaining the flow of research dollars to scientific investigators who fuel progress, innovation and hope.”

“The generosity of Pedal the Cause, including donors, sponsors, riders, volunteers and others, is an investment in science, health, our community and ourselves,” said Timothy J. Eberlein, M.D., director of Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and WashU Medicine. “The tens of millions of dollars raised since 2010 have launched multiple new approaches that have reduced the burden of cancer on our patients. Together, this relationship – Pedal and Siteman – is making cancer a chronic disease. We could not do this alone.”

Pedal the Cause was founded in and remains local to St. Louis, now having grown to one of the top ten largest cause-related cycling events in North America. This year, Pedal the Cause, presented by Edward Jones, returns for its sixteenth year of raising critical funds for adult and pediatric cancer research with an exciting lineup of cycling and community events. On September 20 and 21, thousands will gather in St. Charles for a celebratory weekend of pedaling, building community, festivities and family fun.
