ST. LOUIS (Sept. 25, 2023) — Over 5,000 riders, kids, volunteers and spectators gathered in Chesterfield on September 23 & 24 to ride their bikes, celebrate community and to fund cancer research at Siteman Cancer Center and Siteman Kids at St. Louis Children’s Hospital through the annual cycling challenge, Pedal the Cause. In its 14th year, Pedal the Cause has become much more than just a bike ride; it’s a two-day celebration of life and community. Together, with the mission to cure cancer – all cancers, for all people – cancer fighters, survivors, Siteman and Siteman Kids’ physicians and physician scientists, Barnes-Jewish Hospital administration and staff, and others who have been touched by cancer united to ride, celebrate and raise money for this vital research.
Founded in 2010 with the bold model of using 100 percent of public donations to fund world-class cancer research, Pedal the Cause has donated more than $40.8 million, funding 211 adult and pediatric projects. These projects produce groundbreaking results that lead to new treatments, cures, preventions and early detection diagnostics, bringing us ever closer to our shared mission of creating a world without cancer. This “100% model” is made possible by the generous support of sponsors, led by presenting sponsor Edward Jones.
“Pedal the Cause 2023 was one for this history books,” said David Drier, executive director of Pedal the Cause. “We felt the incredible energy and momentum from the community who showed up this past weekend in unprecedented numbers. We can see this momentum in our funded research and have heard it from our community of doctors, researchers and our Living Proof cancer fighters, survivors and thrivers. We are deeply thankful to the Pedal the Cause community for making this year’s event so exciting and memorable, and for continuing to fundraise until October 31st to create the biggest impact possible.”
“Cancer is relentless, a formidable foe,” said Timothy J. Eberlein, M.D., director of Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.
“Without this incredible partnership of Pedal participants, we would not be able to lead the country in groundbreaking discoveries that lead to new treatments for our patients — and more hope!”
In addition to Sunday’s ride which included eight different cycling routes ranging from 10 – 100 miles and a Spin Zone, participants enjoyed the Kids Challenge, Taste the Cause, the Inspirational Program and a Post-Ride Celebration throughout the weekend. There is still time to donate to fund cancer research and help Pedal the Cause reach their 2023 goal of donating the largest check to date to their beneficiaries.
