Press Release: Pedal the Cause Donates $5M to Advance Cancer Research

November 16, 2023

Highest-ever donation by the organization to bolster St. Louis cancer research institutions

ST. LOUIS (Nov. 16, 2023) — Last night at their Check Presentation Celebration, Pedal the Cause announced the results of their 2023 fundraising campaign to a packed house at The Factory in Chesterfield. A record-breaking $5,003,916 was donated to Siteman Cancer Center and Siteman Kids at St. Louis Children’s Hospital to fund the best new ideas in adult and pediatric cancer research.

The donation is highest ever made in the organization’s 14-year history. Founded in 2010 with the bold model of using 100 percent of public donations to fund world-class cancer research, Pedal the Cause has donated more than $45.8 million, funding 211 adult and pediatric projects. These projects produce groundbreaking results that lead to new treatments, cures, preventions and early detection diagnostics. This “100% model” is made possible by the generous support of sponsors, led by presenting sponsor Edward Jones.

“Thank you to the Pedal the Cause community for helping create phenomenal momentum and progress in cancer research and treatment,” said Timothy J. Eberlein, M.D., director of Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

“Without this incredible partnership of Pedal participants, we would not be able to lead the country in groundbreaking discoveries that lead to new treatments for our patients — and more hope!”

“Crossing the $5 million mark has been a goal of ours for many years,” said David Drier, executive director of Pedal the Cause. “After a remarkable event in September, we felt this momentum from our community to push our impact further than we’ve ever gone. We are deeply thankful to all our Pedal the Cause riders, fundraisers, donors, sponsors and supporters for making 2023 one for the history books. The impact of these dollars is bringing us ever closer to our shared mission of creating a world without cancer.”

At the Check Presentation Celebration, Pedal the Cause also announced their new venue for 2024. Organizational leadership embarked on a multi-year search to find the best possible home to allow thousands of riders to safely take to the roads while offering room for the organization to grow, expand regionally and increase their impact. Ultimately, they found the Family Arena in St. Charles would offer an enhanced event experience and courses while putting rider safety as priority one. Learn more about the venue change here.
